Plugins and helper applications
Some common plugin/helpers are Realplayer, Quicktime, Windows Media Player, Flash, Java, Shockwave
Try out the available features (stop, pause, move to a different starting place, find a particular place, i.e. 24 sec mark, make the video window bigger, increase volume, etc.) on the plugin and player. What might be advantages/disadvantages of each when you are using them for teaching?
Tools for capturing, converting, or editing video:
For information on saving YouTube (and similar) videos, see:
“The Internet Video Odyssey”
"When YouTube is Blocked: 8 ways around"
"The best ways to access educational YouTube video at schools"
Is YouTube blocked at your school? Try Edublogs.tv - you can upload YouTube videos to this site and view them in your school.
Firefox users have several add-ons (extensions) to choose that will aid in downloading video. Here are two good ones:
-
Firefox's Video Download Helper is another, somewhat more complex and flexible, add-on. It allows you to download any, selected, or all videos on a page.
-
Media Pirate can be added to Firefox as an extension, or you can simply use their website in any browser. Copy and paste the video's URL and save the file; you have to rename it after you've saved it, but Media Pirate tells you the file extension to use.
Other tools:
Zamzar will convert any format to another format for just about anything.
Handbrake
QuickTime Pro
Tools for editing audio
Audacity
