Formats and Materials

Bring Your Own Materials to Work with at the Summer Institute

For the CARLA Summer Institute, you are welcome to bring and work with your own content (textbook, lessons, URLs of favorite websites, pictures, audio CDs, video, etc.) during many of the hands-on sessions.  In addition to learning the various tools and technologies presented during the Institute, you may then be able to produce actual multimedia projects featuring your own materials.

If at all possible, please bring your multimedia materials in an already-digitized format, preferably on either CD-R or DVD-R, or portable USB Flash or “thumb”drives. You might also want to consider bringing your own digital camera and/or camcorder. We should be able to connect to and download from most such devices, especially those from major name-brand manufacturers.

Please follow these guidelines for collecting and bringing your own (digitized) multimedia content:

 (1) Photos and other images

  1. JPEG format preferred
  2. GIF, PNG formats OK

 (2) Audio

  1. MP3 format preferred
  2. AIFF or WAV format OK
  3. Prerecorded/commercial audio CDs OK

(3) Video

  1.  Quicktime MOV or DV format preferred
  2.  Prerecorded/commercial DVDs NOT OK

 (4) CD-Rs / DVD-Rs

  1. Should be formatted/burned to be cross-platform (Mac/PC) compatible, if possible

You should be informed of copyright issues and fair use guidelines in the selection and incorporation of multimedia. Read The Educator's Guide to Copyright and Fair Use http://www.techlearning.com/db_area/archives/TL/2002/10/copyright.html (also articles on the readings list).

See if your institution has specific information on copyright and fair use. If not, you might want to take a look at some fairly readable fair use guidelines from the University of Texas at http://www.utsystem.edu/ogc/intellectualproperty/ccmcguid.htm
